Contemporary Chinese Politics (6 ECTS) is a lecture course taught this spring by Urmas Pappel and Liisi Karindi at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies, University of Tartu.

Time and place: Mondays 10:15, Lossi 36-306.

The course is taught for the fifth time and enjoys the highest student feedback ranking of the institute. The course is in English and will entail a great deal of seminars and in-class discussions.


After taking this course, a student is able to understand the main concepts, structure and functioning of Chinese politics, their effect on Chinese society, and their historical and philosophical background. A students should also know how to interpret news from China and critically analyze Chinese politics. In addition, a student will learn how to write academic papers, exercise independent thinking, work in groups and argue in public.
